Workflowy, Shortcomings & World Cup Soccer Scores

Frank Degenaar

"I gots to know"

I don't know about you, but I'm terrible at remembering sports scores. Even, say, when it was a soccer game that was battled out just last week. For many countries participating in the FIFA Soccer World Cup, the scores spell out a long list of shortcomings... and for the eventual victor - a trajectory right to the summit of football's crowing glory. Either way, it's handy to be able to find the results you're looking for at a glance. Unless you're Rain Man or just plain obsessed with sports statistics, WorkFlowy's got you covered. You'll find it to be a worthy ally.

Charlie Brown's list

WorkFlowy - as an outlining and list-making app - is great that way... tacking on additional information as it comes along is child's play. It might have made Lucy's list-making mission a tad bit easier. The thing about creating your own list, is that you tend to remember at least part of what you record. As it was for me with my own tailor-made WorkFlowy score list. Go ahead and download and/or tinker with it.

Go-with-you-ability

Countless times I've whipped out my iPhone in a one-man quick draw (press-slide-tap) over the last few weeks. The stats I've needed have been at my fingertips. Your WorkFlowy lists go where you go. Internet connection or not.

Collaps-ability & Zoom-ability

Create your list and stack it the way you want, with the sections or categories you want. Expand or collapse at specific nodes to show as much or as little detail as you want. Zoom in to a specific node to isolate it and simplify what you see as well as search only within that node context.

Search-ability & Scroll-ability

Google is great... but... it will not easily give you the combinations your personal WorkFlowy list gives you. Google may be a starting point for gathering your information, but Workflowy organizes and searches your lists the way you design it. Scrolling works just fine in most cases... however, the search feature gives exactly the combined information you are looking for:

  • In the early stages of the event, it is useful to compare the performance of a specific Group (A-H). Simply pop the group letter into the search field and the 6 first stage games of that group are brought up. (Workflowy has brilliant tag and context features. As you can see, it is not necessary here, since a letter within parentheses is a unique enough combination to imitate a tag).
  • Pop any country into the search field and it will instantly whittle down your list to include all the instances where that country appears. Just like that - you can see that country's performance game by game. You will either see its demise or its path to the finals.

My list has proven invaluable in conversations with my private English students. I live in Brazil... so it's been a game-changer for me in a country where football is a religion in itself. It's given us invaluable insight each step of the way when making predictions and comparing teams' performances. What's more... it's the simplest thing in the world to put together. I'm convinced that whatever sporting event you're following, WorkFlowy will add an extra dimension of flow-ability when it comes to accessing scores... or any type of statistics.

Oh... I almost forgot!

All good things must come to an end: Good luck to both Germany and Argentina in the finals today. May the best team win!
